A good base layer is essential for comfort and performance, preparing you to run successfully in cold weather. Remember, this is just a base layer: you can always add other layers. In general, your base layer is comfortable when running in cold weather, between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius.

If you run in warmer and/or less rainy weather, you can rely on your summer running shoes if they are waterproof. If you don’t want to invest in a separate pair, you can add a waterproof one.

If you run on snowy trails, you’ll need durable, grippy winter shoes. If you’re running, choose a high-top pair with GORE-TEX lining.

If you typically experience patches of ice during the winter, take a pair of shoes outside to prevent extra traction and slipping. If you’re going through a lot of snow, choose a pair with deep lugs and adequate insulation. You can also pair them with some really warm running socks (see below for details).

Remember that EVA foam becomes harder in cold weather, so the cushioning in your running shoes won’t be as soft when the temperature drops. This is something to keep in mind when choosing running shoes with the right amount of cushioning (i.e., go for more cushioning).

You should also make sure you are physically fit, as running in the cold increases your risk of injury. Look for adequate support and a comfortable fit, and try your new shoes on the stairs or sidewalk before purchasing. Try them with running socks and if in doubt, size up a half size.

Waterproof or moisture-resistant socks and shoes with good traction are essential parts of your winter wardrobe.

It’s a good idea to have a pair of waterproof or moisture-proof socks in winter, as rain and snow can quickly make walks slippery and uncomfortable. Look for a pair made from merino wool or synthetic fabric, designed to insulate and keep your feet warm.

To avoid the dangers of the cold, wear appropriate shoes to reduce your risk of falling, wear clothing that provides optimal warmth and put on wet clothes as soon as you return from a race.

Although simply running in the cold won’t make you sick, it can lower your body temperature and increase your risk of catching a virus after exposure. So, if you come into contact with an infected person or surface, the cold virus can infect you and make you sick.

First, you need shoes that offer insulation, moisture management, visibility and traction. If you run in snow or ice, you may need a different pair of winter shoes.
