There are many unique options in Norway and staying in the right place can make your trip unique. I mean, this is not a country of big cities where you want to stay in some luxury hotel. Norway’s strength is its beauty and rich culture, and one of the easiest ways to do both is to choose a beautiful destination.

Tromsø Hotels: Where To Stay In Tromsø, Norway

And I think this is especially true for trips to the Northern Lights. Of course, if you want to see the northern lights, you can easily book a hotel in Tromsø and take a northern lights tour outside the city to chase the lights. And I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

I’ve also shared more tips about the Northern Lights here, including how to photograph (and film) the Northern Lights and the best places to see the Northern Lights here. And if you need more help, check out my Northern Lights eBook, which includes everything you need to know for your Northern Lights trip.

Tromsø is a great starting point for any Northern Lights trip. The city itself is beautiful with many things to do and many fun winter tours and activities from Tromsø. You can find my full guide to winter in Tromsø here.

But I always wanted people to get out of the city and stay somewhere special, and Glass Isles at North Experience Basecamp was perfect. I am 90 minutes drive from Tromsø, near Lyngenjord, which I personally think is one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway.

Where To See The Northern Lights

Traveling is very easy even in winter because it is located on a major road in the area, so you will have no problem renting a car and driving here.

The glass eyelets here are perfect for viewing the Northern Lights from the warmth of your bed. They have an outdoor hot tub and a nice sauna on the property.

An hour’s drive from Tromsø, Somarroi Island is one of my favorite spots here. The views are amazing and the water is so turquoise you think you are in the tropics. You can easily visit it on a day trip from Tromsø, but if you want to see the Northern Lights, it’s a good place to stay for a few nights because the sky is nice and dark.

I was staying at the Sommerroy Arctic Hotel when my friend Samantha came to visit and they even adopted a dog! We stayed in a room of their model (again friendly), but there are many other good options if you don’t go with the dog. Our bedroom on the water looks amazing.

Of The Best Northern Lights Tours

The hotel has a sauna with a walk directly from the sea to take some icy dips, as well as a hot tub for rent. The restaurant is also very good, with beautiful views of the water. After dinner, the northern lights appeared and we just went out to the balcony behind the hotel and took pictures there.

The Arctic Dome in Cokelev is the best place to watch the northern lights – I fell asleep here because of the lights above my bed. It’s like living in a glass igloo, but with a little more privacy.

The dome sits on top, so you have a full, unobstructed view of the sky, and here is a Sami-style thatched house with a kitchen, shower and sauna.

Cokelev is a two-hour drive from Alta so you’ll need a car for this, but I promise it’s worth it. Also, the trail is beautiful.

If you want to stay in an igloo without renting a car, the Arctic Dome of Glod Explorer is the best because you can fly to Alta and they will pick you up at the airport. This is probably the most beautiful arctic dome I have ever been in. A bathroom is attached, so you don’t have to go out to use the bathroom, and they will wake you up with coffee delivered or come to drink. Fire in the wood stove every morning.

Alta is one of the best places in Norway to chase the Northern Lights and you can hang out with Huskies at Holmen Huskies!

You can tour the area with huskies or go husky sledding here, and Mini Lavvu accommodation is very convenient. They even came with their own little oven! This is one of the cheapest options on this list.

In fact, I would say that Senja is one of the easiest places to chase the Northern Lights on your own if you don’t want to join a tour.

I recommend staying in the wild of Norway, which has a good choice, from the simple trees to the lighthouse and the Arctic Dome. Also, Mr. Hege is one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Another accommodation option in Senja is the Northern Lights Observatory, which is not only a luxury accommodation, but also a great place to see the Northern Lights. I think I always see beautiful aurora photos taken here on Facebook and Instagram.
