Lakewood United Methodist Church and St. Bernadette Catholic Parish Partner to Open Emergency Shelters

Lakewood United Methodist Church and St. Bernadette Catholic Parish will open their churches as coordinated 24-hour shelters due to extreme winter weather

LAKEWOOD, CO—On Dec. 20, the leadership of Lakewood United Methodist Church (Lakewood UMC) voted to become an emergency shelter during nights of extremely cold weather in anticipation of the harsh conditions expected on Dec. 21. Lakewood UMC and St. Bernadette Catholic Parish will partner to provide 24-hour shelter on Dec. 22 when the worst conditions are expected.

Lakewood UMC’s overnight shelter will open at 7 p.m. on Dec. 21 and close at 7 a.m. each morning as conditions pass. Lakewood UMC hopes to provide breakfast and dinner for up to thirty individuals and serve as a welcoming space where everyone’s dignity is honored. St. Bernadette Catholic Parish will operate as a day shelter from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m. on Dec. 22.

“I am grateful for the kindness and dedication of these two community parishes during this brutal weather,” said Lakewood City Councilor Sophia Mayott-Guerrero. “But we know that many unhoused people are in need of shelter every day and during all types of weather. As your city councilor, I am committed to creating more temporary and permanent spaces for people to rest their bodies, recover their strength, and rebuild their lives.”

Both parishes call on local businesses and residents for help. Donations are accepted at and catered meals, cots, winter gloves, hats, scarves, and socks are needed. If you’re interested in volunteering at either location, please contact Some shifts will require overnight work. Questions about the efforts can be directed to
