Jaco Beach (pronounced hacoh) is 90 km southeast of the San Jose airport in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Jaco is a very developed beach town with a large and busy promenade.

Due to its proximity to the capital, Jaco Beach is very popular for Costa Rica vacations. The Ruta 27 highway from San Jose to Jaco is a four-lane highway that is smooth and easy to navigate.
On the way to Jaco Beach, you will pass the famous “crocodile bridge” over the Tarcoles River and Carrara National Park.
Jaco is famous for its parties – all the bars and discotheques are happening at night, it is not unusual to see prostitutes (prostitution is legal in Costa Rica), and the drug trade is growing quickly there.
It is also not uncommon to see school children walking around town in their uniforms on their way to school. Jaco has a busy weekend market, a beautiful shopping mall, thousands of restaurants and daily services at the Catholic church. Jaco has one of everything.

That’s why visiting Jaco is one of the top destinations every time we visit Costa Rica. The south side of the beach is quiet, well stocked with grocery stores and our favorite house (Paloma Blanca) is there.
Jaco Beach is easy to get to from San Jose airport by car, public transportation, taxi, even taxi and Uber. It is located on the Costanera highway – about one hour south of Puntarenas and about two hours north of Manuel Antonio National Park.
It’s easy to find out how to get to Jaco Beach with Waze or Google Maps – it’s one of those places you can’t miss. If you are flying into Juan Santamaria International Airport during the day or even in the evening, you can start your trip to Manuel Antonio by going to Jaco and sleeping before heading south.
Another great thing about Jaco Beach is all the activities nearby. You can zipline, hike through the national park, go horseback riding, hiking, and ATV riding.

In our family, we usually want to be at the beach – I don’t want to pack the kids and beach stuff and go to the beach and then realize I forgot something. Also, I like to run from the beach and go to my room for a beer.
To that end, when looking at vacation rentals in Jaco, be sure to check the location of the property on the map. Many places have picturesque ocean views, and you are in a tower two miles or more from the beach. Just double check.

Our family loves having a pool nearby. The waves in Jaco can be very strong and the girls like to swim in the pool. When the sun is shining, it’s nice to have a pool umbrella to sit on and still enjoy the warm weather.
Finally, we like to have a kitchen. We don’t like to spend time on the beach and in restaurants, and to be honest, the service in Costa Rica is slow. So we want to buy more snacks and drinks that we can chill in the fridge.
This is my top choice for Jaco with kids, we absolutely love this place. Each home is independently owned, but you can find vacation rentals at Vacasa and Lost Beach Vacations.
Each room has air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, and a terrace overlooking the pool and ocean. There are three swimming pools and a children’s pool, as well as bungalows where you can reserve.

You are literally walking along the beach road, this beach area is not heavily commercialized and has few surfers and few rocks.
Most of Jaco’s restaurants enter this building and there are guards guarding all entrances to protect guests and other people. We always order pizza from Rioasis when we are here.
Choose a suite with a direct ocean view – the sunsets are divine. There is a local horse rider who takes the horses every morning and afternoon, and an art school that has set up shop in the area. Mirador de Jaco is only 3 minutes away.
Expect to pay $75-$200 per night depending on the size of your home and whether it’s upscale or downscale.

Located on the southern tip of the beach, the tropical grounds of this hotel are amazing. The whole place has a 50’s vibe to me and every time I walk by the people there seem happy.
On the beach there is a lawn, where guests can sit on chairs with umbrellas, waiters bring drinks. The on-site restaurant looks great with a good selection of seafood. The rooms have ocean or rainforest views, and the pool is on the ocean.
This child-friendly hotel has friendly and efficient service that exceeds expectations. We haven’t stayed here yet because I’m addicted to La Paloma Blanca, but this is my top choice for the next place.
Selina is a Colombian-owned hotels and motels with other locations in Monteverde, La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio and San Jose. They offer private rooms, Wi-Fi, and shared workspaces, and prices are generally low.

Jako’s property is located on the beach, has a large pool and a shared kitchen. They even have double cylinder rooms – it would be fun to have two of them for parents and teenagers next to each other.
Selina hotels mostly cater to the 20-something crowd, but they offer family rooms at reasonable prices. The location is great and there are plenty of places to enjoy outside your room. I think it’s a great place for families with teenagers.
This hotel is within walking distance to the center of Jaco. There are several types of rooms, including private bathrooms or shared bathrooms. If you’re traveling on a budget, you’ll love the room rates here.
This oceanfront hotel costs $100 a night and includes breakfast. Despite the low price, it feels like a luxury boutique hotel by the sea.
Hotel Best Western Jaco Beach All Inclusive Resort Jaco 3* (costa Rica)
The rooms and apartments are located around the turquoise pool that runs through the property. There are 8-10 self-contained houses with 2-3 rooms.
The apartments have a kitchen, a pool for children and the hotel is located by the sea. It’s about 7 minutes north of Jaco by car to Playa Hermosa, so keep this in mind when booking.
There is free shipping in the area, and it can be nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of Jaco. We haven’t stayed here yet, but the hotel is popular with ticos who leave San Jose for the weekend.
About 15 minutes south of Jaco is the complex of Punta Leona. Punta Leona is a long-standing exclusive beach club for Costa Rica, with an excellent hotel that has access to two of the most beautiful beaches in the country, Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca.

Punta Leona room rentals come with buffet meals of traditional Costa Rican cuisine, and there is a beachside shop selling cold drinks, beer and snacks. There is also an all-inclusive option with à la carte meals.
There is an a la carte restaurant on site and very easy access to the beach – you walk from the pool to the beach. Guest rooms are a short walk away. The house is located in the middle of the rainforest and has extensive tropical gardens.
Nature lovers will enjoy hiking trails, large swimming pools, tennis courts, a butterfly garden, and can arrange literally any excursion. Children play in the playground. Rooms are basic but clean and include small refrigerators, coffee makers, flat screen TVs, satellite channels, and free Wi-Fi throughout the house.
