Another fun and free thing to do in Southwest Michigan is to bring your bike and go for a ride. Our 65 acres have 3 miles of trails to enjoy in the scenic forest. Or hit the Kal-Haven Trail and ride to your heart’s content. From Kalamazoo to South Haven on the shores of Lake Michigan, this 34-mile trail passes through small towns, bustling Lake Michigan beach towns, scenic farmland, orchards and natural wetlands.

Our private Lake Emerson on the castle grounds and our free kayaks and paddle boats provide guests with free entertainment and activities during the warmer months (typically May through October). Listen to the birds singing. Watch out for the fish in the water. Watch the sunrise or sunset.
If you enjoy bird watching, be sure to pack binoculars. Our rural location gives you great opportunities to catch a variety of birds while hiking our nature trails or taking advantage of our kayaks and paddle boats. At the castle, you can see everything from finches and warblers to cardinals and woodpeckers every day. Our guests are thrilled to see nesting bald eagles, great blue herons and red-tailed hawks. If you decide to head to one of our nearby parks or beaches, you may see American white pelicans, sand egrets, indigo herons, great blue herons and more.
We are lucky to be near the shores of one of the great lakes. Within a 30-40 minute drive, you’ll be on one of our beautiful beaches, admiring the beautiful sun as it sets over the mighty Lake Michigan skyline. If you don’t want to go out, you can certainly enjoy a beautiful sunset on our private lake here on the castle grounds. Hug on the lawn or take one of our kayaks or rowboats on a clear evening to watch this daily event.
Who doesn’t love a day at the beach? Plan to spend the whole day at the beach and then be there for the sunset. Beach days give us the chance to jump under the covers and enjoy the sun shining on the lake, the sound of fun on the sand, the warmth of the skin’s rays, and time to absorb and relax. Thanks to nearby Lake Michigan, there are some beautiful beaches to choose from. Douglas Beach Park in Douglas and Laketown Beach in Holland offer free entry, but if you don’t want to pay a small car fee, here are 7 beautiful beaches near the castle.

Every Wednesday night from May to September, the Gilmore Car Museum hosts a Wednesday Night Cruise, where you can browse and admire an array of colorful and shiny classic cars. This fun and free event starts at 5pm and runs until 8pm. You’ll have the chance to enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers and old fashioned custard from George & Sally’s authentic 1941 Blue Moon Diner and The Grill.
For a touch of culture, visit Holland, Michigan. This sister city to its namesake in Europe offers an authentic view of the Netherlands. Windmills, clogs, spring tulips, Delft pottery… it’s all here as you walk the cobbled walkways between over 100 specialty shops. One such shop is Veldheer, where you can see traditional Dutch clogs made from poplar wood with authentic Dutch machinery still used in Europe. In fact, their cutter was specially trained and received his diploma from Holland. You can also browse the famous Delft pottery in all shapes and sizes.
