Depending on your knowledge of European mountains, you would be surprised if mountains like the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps are not on the list. In fact, most entrances are located in the Caucasus Mountains, a vast system of mountain ranges that includes Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. The mountains are considered the geographical dividing line between Europe and Asia – so they can be considered part of both continents. Mount Elbrus in the Russian Caucasus is recognized as the highest mountain on the European continent.

World’s Highest Mountains And Size Isn’t Everything Alternatives
Dyke-Tau is the second highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains, five kilometers north of the Georgian border. Also known as “Besengi Brothers” (another Koshtan-Tau), it is part of the enormous wall of mountains that comprises the northern massif of Besengi National Park.
Although slightly shorter than Mount Elbrus, Dyke-Tau is a more technical climb. There is no easy way to reach the top – it is known for its technical difficulties and failures are common. Obtaining permission for the Besengi area requires careful planning.
Shkara is Georgia’s highest point across the Russian border. The 7.5 mile long ridge is part of the magnificent Besenki wall. According to historian and mountaineer Audrey Salkeld, the complete traverse of the Besenghi wall is “the longest, most exhausting and most exhilarating hike in Europe”. So guess what? Getting out of a difficult situation can be difficult.
Named after the first mountaineer to reach the summit in 1888, the Kokin Route is an easy route rated 4B-5A by the Russian system, involving climbing a snow slope and traversing the northeast valley.

Koshtan-Tau is the second of the Besengi brothers, and although a bit smaller, it has an attractive pyramid shape that appeals to mountain lovers. At the end of the 19th century, it was climbed for the first time during the climbing season of the Golden Mountain – the Austrian Alpine Club. It reached its peak in 1888.
Like all the mountains on this list, climbing Koshtan-Tau requires skill and dedication. Experienced climbers can take Route 4A on the north side of the mountain.
Kazbek, a dormant stratovolcano with a pyramid-shaped summit, is the highest mountain in eastern Georgia. This is one of the best hikes in Georgia. It’s a more accessible peak to climb than the others mentioned earlier on the list, but it’s still a fun challenge. We recommend a two-day hike to get a feel for the area and acclimatise. Camp at the Altut mountain refuge and attempt to climb the Arsha pass (highest point at 3,880m).
The Kazbek mountain trek is a two-day trek. On day one, drive from Altihut to Metto Station, a former weather station now a shelter and campsite. See Bethlehem Church at 3,930 meters above sea level. It takes 11 hours to reach the summit from Altihat and back. It is a difficult route with narrow roads, over glaciers and a climb in the last 100 meters. But the views are amazing!

Climb Kazbek Mountain in Georgia | Big adventures Climb the highest mountain in eastern Georgia (5054 m) and climb one of the wildest trails in the Caucasus on this challenging trek with expert local guides.
This Georgian mountain may not be as tall as Mount Kazbek, but it is located in the remote Svaneti region and is ideal for hiking. It’s a fantastic and challenging climb – like Tetnuldi, both low altitude climbs are highly recommended.
Most climbers approach Tetnuldi via the southwestern ridge. It is common to pitch tents at Camp 2 (3700m) on the first day and spend a day hiking in the area. It’s a steady climb up to 4300m – after which you’ll climb along exposed ridges. You may need to use a top rope to reach the top, so be sure to travel with an experienced guide.

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe – and the eleventh most popular mountain in the world, attracting climbers from all over the world. The first ascent was made in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michael Packard. 2013 climber and sprinter Kilian Jornet achieved the fastest ascent and descent – in 4 hours and 57 minutes! Seems like an unbeatable pace to us (but proves us wrong in every way) – however, with 20,000 people reaching the summit each year, the climb itself is a challenge.

We recommend going in a small group with a very experienced guide – climb to the top on the quietest Monday of the week. As always, a few day hikes in the area will give you a head start. Find the shelter of the Mont Blanc tramway in the Nid d’Aigle. It takes 11 to 14 hours to climb and descend the famous Dom de Gout and Bosses Ridge – and spend the night at the future Refuge du Gouter.
Mount Shimara is located 5.5 miles west of Mount Kazbek in North Ossetia-Alania, Russian Republic. It is the second highest peak in the Kok region – Mount Kazbek is the highest.

Unlike its neighbors, you won’t find any hikes to the summit – in fact, we couldn’t find much information about Digimara (also spelled Jimara). Ushba is a famous peak in the Western Caucasus with two peaks – the southern peak is slightly higher than the northern peak (its height is 4690 m). The mountain’s steep slopes and towering twin peaks have attracted hikers for years. Reaching the top is a huge feat, as the mountain claims the lives of half a dozen skiers every year. Their sheer walls and ice-filled chasms are not easy to traverse. The region is known for its harsh climate; Think of high winds and snowstorms.
The mountain known as the “Matterhorn of the Caucasus” has about 50 routes – most of them belong to categories 5 and 6. The Northern Ushba Classic route is considered the easiest (it’s 4B) – it takes you through the Ushba plateau to the top. If you want to reach the highest South Peak, the Gabriel Line is considered the least necessary.
