In the 17th century, Newton discovered the visible spectrum. The visible spectrum creates the rainbow colors we see in the sky after a storm.
He discovered this by separating white light with water droplets and showing the visible spectrum of colored light. The reflection of light in water droplets produces the rainbow spectrum we are all familiar with.
But a rainbow does not automatically divide into a certain number of different colors. It’s a series of colors that blur together. Newton decided to divide the spectrum to make the colors easier to see and understand, thus we get the colors of the rainbow.

But this number is much higher than you might think. It all started with a man named Pythagoras in ancient Greece.
Pythagoras of Samos was a Greek philosopher who lived in the 6th century BC. As an early philosopher, he influenced some of the most famous philosophers we know today, including Plato and Aristotle.
We owe him the discovery of the Pythagorean theorem, the spherical shape of the Earth, and the identification of morning and evening stars such as Venus.

Pythagoras had the theory that 7 was a magic number. According to him, it is the sum of 3 spirits (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and 4 substances (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water).
If you think about it, 7 is definitely a number that is seen everywhere. The 7 Deadly Sins, 7 Days of the Week, 7 Wonders of the World and more.
A great admirer of Pythagoras, Newton undoubtedly understood the magic of the number 7 and embraced the idea of its magic.
When Newton set out to isolate the colors of the rainbow, he initially chose only 5 colors to define the color spectrum. These colors are red, yellow, green, blue and violet. But in honor of the magic of the number seven, he went back and added two more colors: orange and indigo.

He did this to recognize and confirm the Pythagorean theory that there was a connection between colors and music. Since there are 7 musical notes, Newton thought there must be 7 colors for each musical note.
